Surfsiders, A huge thank you to all who came out to participate in or cheer-on the Spring Fling Tournament this past Saturday! A good time was certainly had by all, lots of smiles and laughs, great weather and some strong competition! I especially appreciate the good humor shared by those who didn’t have their best day out there, next time perhaps there should be a bogie award, I’ll talk to my people. Meanwhile - drum roll please…. here are your winners! Congratulations to our top three scorers: First Place: Brian O’Farrell – this was Brian’s first day as a member of Surfside and he took the “W”! Second Place: John Bea – another somewhat new member who helped John Howard demolish my partner and I in the fourth set, so a prize was well earned! Third Place: John Engvall – John recruited Brian O’Farrell, otherwise he may have been in 2nd place! J Also, a shout out to Keith Crowfoot, Silvio Desantis, Choy Jung and Carl Pherson who showed up to help in many ways – collecting the prizes, getting the courts ready, charting scores and being available to substitute if needed. It’s always a team effort, thank you gentlemen! I’m so grateful to be part of such a fun and collaborative group of people – hope to see you on a Saturday soon. Lara Henry, Tournament Director |

Hello Surfside Tennis Club Members,
It was a challenging day on the courts due to the relentless winds, yet all that signed up for the annual Turkey Tussle tournament showed up and played. It wasn’t always pretty, there were numerous shots that stayed in that should have gone out and many that just blew off the court. It is humbling (and embarrassing) to swing at a ball and feel nothing but air blowing through your strings, something I experienced a few times myself that day. I applaud everyone for playing in these demanding conditions and I hope that all of you had a fun time.
Here are the results from a field of 18 players (with 5 substitutes taking turns filling in to bring us to a full 5 courts of doubles).
1st Place with 24 wins - Colt Wilkinson 2nd Place with 23 wins - Mark Stephens 3rd Place with 23 wins - Greg Burke Second and third place finish was determined by tie-breaker (spinning of the racquet) 4th Place with 20 wins - Shoni Swenson Fourth place was also determined by tie-breaker (spinning of the racquet) with Lori Martin who also had 20 wins.
Colt, Mark, and Greg each received a $25.00 gift card. Shoni left with the frozen turkey.
Special thanks to Coach Taylor Bennett and MBHS for reserving the courts for our tournament.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Surfsiders will have two special additions to our usual tennis activities this Saturday:
??President Keith Crowfoot will be bringing the ball machine to the courts at 8:00 AM for anyone that is interested in warming up before beginning our normal Saturday morning event.
??As announced over two weeks ago in accordance with our Bylaws, President Keith Crowfoot will call a brief General Meeting to order between the second and third sets to vote to amend Article II.1 of the Bylaws as follows 1. Surfside is classified under CA Code 23701g and IRC 501(c)(7) as a social and recreational organization operated exclusively for the purposes set forth in Article II including supporting the Girls and Boys Tennis Teams at Morro Bay High School to develop athletes for tennis competition.
1. Surfside is classified under CA Code 23701d as a charitable organization operated exclusively for the purposes set forth in Article II including supporting the Girls and Boys Tennis Teams at Morro Bay High School to develop athletes for tennis competition.
We will begin playing tennis on MBHS courts Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 9 AM. The forecast predicts we will have sunny and calm (believe it or not) weather in the high 50s to low 60s during our four sets (32 games) of enjoyable no-ad doubles social tennis. Some participants may wish to challenge themselves to more competitive play in a fifth or sixth set.
In all regular Saturday events we try to adhere to these practices:
- Please print and sign the chart upon arrival so we can properly make court assignments.
- Your signature certifies that you are playing at your own risk.
- When we gather while masked you will draw your own cards so you know that team assignments are random!
- You are encouraged to 'redistribute' the partnerships on each court in order to equalize the competition.
- Please announce set scores before each game and announce game scores before each serve.
- Etiquette follows "The Code": https://elmridgetennis.com/Files/Code_of_Tennis.pd
- "Late arrivers" can take club balls to the empty courts in order to warm up for the next set.
- "Early leavers" should separate from the group so we know how many cards to include in the draw for the subsequent sets. USTA Covid 19 guidelines suggest leaving the court immediately after matches thus avoiding the temptation to gather and chat.
- We appreciate the courteous cooperation of Surfsiders when team and court adjustments are necessary.
See you on the MBHS courts,
Carl |

 Wretched Tournament
September 18, 2021
The calm, gray, overcast morning for our 2021 Wretched Tournament was perfect tennis weather for the 24 Surfside contestants that came out to compete on the courts at MBHS. Our tournament director, Lara Henry, provided the starting lineup as seen here: It seems that every year this creative but somewhat confusing bracket chart raises the usual questions and remarks about the order of play. Nevertheless, once the players finished studying and deciphering the chart, they removed their 3D glasses, put their compasses and sextants away and play began.
There were 3 rounds of our normal no-ad 8 game sets. The six teams that made it into the finals played a regular scoring fourth set.
Throughout the matches I observed the varying tactics employed by the players to overwhelm their opponents. Everything from drop shots, high lobbing moon balls, passing shots, and overhead smashes were attempted. There were long suspenseful rallies that were fun to watch as the players patiently returned shots and waited for their chance to hit a winner or for the other team to make a mistake. It was great to see everyone having fun even as they were playing competitive tennis. Laughter and “Good Shot!” was heard often from the courts.
After the final shot of the final match was completed, we had our winners! Congratulations to the following teams for their achievement.
Aryn and Ken Jorgensen Kathy Dannecker & Concho Crotzer Morri Nash and Dennis Bailey
For their efforts players each received a $15.00 gift certificate from local Morro Bay merchants.
I want to thank everyone that came out to play for contributing to the success of this tournament. The general tone of the day was that of good fun and sportsmanship. That can only be attained by the positive attitudes and personalities of the participants. I am happy that Surfside Tennis has members with these qualities.
I want to also thank MBHS tennis coach Taylor Bennett for reserving the courts for us to use. Taylor has been having a very busy tennis season and we appreciate her taking the time and helping us out.
Lara Henry did a wonderful job in organizing the tournament and keeping things moving smoothly, even as she was playing in the event. A special thanks to you, Lara!
Photos from the tournament have been uploaded to the website and can be seen here:
See you on the courts!
