Long-time Surfside Tennis Club members will be sad to learn that our former Historian, Mike Sylvia, died peacefully at age 71 last Wednesday from complications due to two strokes he suffered in 2006 and 2009. I did not know Mike during his peak tennis years but I have heard at least five other members comment that he was an excellent player. His wife, Lisa, told me last evening that the moment he stepped on a tennis court Mike was “happy as a clam.” That was evident to me after I joined the club a decade ago as he always had a big grin and greeted everyone when he returned to play a few games on Saturday mornings at Los Osos Middle School just a few blocks away from his home. Mike and Lisa each had a son and daughter from previous marriages. Their lovely youngest daughter, Katy, who is a Cal Poly engineering graduate, occasionally joined her parents to play with Surfside. Declining health resulted in the need for Mike to have full time care in a local care home for several years. One of the tragic results of our current COVID-19 crisis is that Lisa was unable to visit Mike on lockdown for the past two weeks or comfort him at the end. Lisa still resides at the family home at 1517 18thStreet, LO and her cell phone is 805 204 0669.
